JIANCHUAN BLACK POTTERY - BIG
Couldn't load pickup availability
This pottery originates from the Jianchuan area of Yunnan. Created using a unique firing technique passed down through generations of artisans, it reflects deeply lifestyle and cultural sensibilities of the Bai community.
The pieces are made without glaze. Instead, during the final stage of firing, pine wood is introduced and the kiln is sealed. Carbon from the smoke penetrates the clay, naturally blackening the surface.
Subtle silver tones and shifting variations appear in the light—traces left by fire, oxygen, and time—giving each piece its own distinct character. As time passes, the luster and color continue to evolve.
Often described as “black like lacquer” and “resonant like a stone chime,” these works embody both visual depth and tactile presence.
This tradition has been preserved through generations within a family of artisans known as Jianchuan Dong Yuechang Heitao Ji, where techniques have been closely guarded and carefully transmitted.
